Hello!

This week we chat to Ingrid Anderson, who is probably New Zealand's best known textile designer.  We love Ingrid for her designs and her generosity.  She's great to work with and incredibly supportive of up and coming talent, regularly hosting students in her studio.  For those who love her work, you are also going to be happy about this week's specials....

How did you get into textile design?

While I was doing my art degree I also did a part time screen printing course and I loved it.  I loved the way there are no right and wrongs and you don't really know how a design is going to turn out until you lift the screen and reveal it.  I started out with a kids clothing company and would design and sew the clothes in our garage.  I moved into cushions and fabric as we were building our home, and my range became more of a celebration of the home - I love designing something nice that you can use everyday.

What is it about working with textiles that you love?

I particularly love the process of designing and experimenting with colour.

What inspires your designs?

New Zealand - I am inspired by our flora and fauna and our heritage and whatever I design relates back to this country we live in.  I also love the clean look of the 50's and you can see that in my work.

How do you go about creating a design?

I use paper stencils, tracing paper and colouring in pencils - it is a bit like Kindy!  I draw a design, cut it out and then sit at a big table and fit the designs I have made together in different ways, stylise it and play with colour until I like it.  I will usually have the foliage or original drawing beside me.  I mostly work with paper, but some of my designs such as Fernbird are hand drawn.

Which of your designs are you most proud of?

I like them all for different reasons.  For example, I love Karaka because I love orange, the Fernbird because he makes me feel happy and the Kakabeak as it is new.

So is orange your favourite colour?

Yes, I love orange.  And I don't like navy blue.

Do you have your designs in your own home?

Yes I do, mainly as cushions.  I am one of those people who changes cushions regularly and I find having my designs around me is a good way of critiquing them.  My kids rooms also have my designs as blinds and bedding but they have ones that didn't make it to market.

How have people used your designs in the past?

They are often used for curtains, blinds and cushions which I love to imagine.  For a Pasifika show my fabrics were used in fashion and it was interesting to see how they translated into clothes.  For Fashion Week I worked with furniture brand Meluka and we covered their settees in my prints - the results were stunning.

Do you have any favourite textile designers?

I appreciate the work of Marimekko for their clean simplicity and boldness, and I also like Florence Broadhurst's  - their work doesn't drive my designs though.

Why do you think there are so few textile designers in New Zealand?

I think the main problem is how expensive it is to do here, which makes it very hard to make a living.  Textiles are mainly done off shore.

What's next for you?

I have just launched a new design called Kakabeak (the Maori also called it Red Kowhai).

Kakabeak on Cotton Duck

My design is a very sculptural form of the flower and that interested me.  I love the placement of the design on the fabric - it is more free formed than my other designs and really well suited to curtains and blinds.  I am looking forward to getting feedback on it.  There is also a White Kakabeak which I am exploring printing on linen.
